VINPROM- ROUSSE

About us

The Rousse winery was set up as part of the state spirits monopoly in 1948. The contemporary plant was built in 1967. Vinprom Rousse was privatised in 1998 and Seabord Coropration became owner of 96% of the shares. The multinational company invested in grape growing, wine making, quality control system and information technology.

To gain a competitive edge and be adequate in the processes of consolidation in the international wine industry, in 2001 Vinprom Rousse merged with the innovative Bulgarian producer and trader Domaine Boyar. The new company Boyar Estates is now the largest producer of Bulgarian wine in the country and abroad.

One of the most important investment programmes of Seaboard Corporation was focused on backward integration into grape growing. The viticultural project envisaged creation of 228 ha. vineyard of a "New World" type. The terrain is in the municipality of Nova Zagora, the Thracian Valley Viticultural and Wine Region. Planting of the first 20 ha. Merlot was completed in 1999. The company is planning an expansion of the existing plot. Since 2000 consultancy on the vineyard matters is entrusted to the acclaimed Australian viticultural consulting company "Di Davidson Viticultural Consulting".




Vinprom Rousse is the first Bulgarian winery to acquire the ISO 9002: 1994 certificate. We also have CMI "Golden Certificate" for the vinification and bottling of wines.

We produce wine of the following grape varieties: Chardonnay, Muscat Ottonel, Sauvignon Blanc, Dimiat, Rikat, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Gamza.

We are currently increasing the percentage of wines bottled with artificial stoppers as we want to eliminate the possibility of cork tain in our wines. This decision was taken after careful research of world practices. Synthetic materials are harmless to consumers' health and they do not have any influence on wine taste.

CHARDONNAY LIMITED SELECTION 2000
Made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes. 97% of the blend ferments in new Bulgarian oak barrels. The impression is of forward barrique nose and mineral, smokey and tar notes in the background. The winery releases only 25 000 bottles a year.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON LIMITED SELECTION 2000
Our 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon is dark ruby coloured with intriguing fragrances of black berries, minerals and moss. On the palate, the texture is smooth, lush and spicy. This wine is well balanced, long and smooth although the finish is still a bit hard. Since the wine is made to age, it will soften with time. The winery releases only 25 000 bottles a year.

MERLOT LIMITED SELECTION 2000
Dark purple and intense looking, this Merlot is brimming over with aromas of red berries, minerals and smoke. The palate is rich in spice, has smooth texture, pleasant lingering finish and a reminiscent mineral note in the aftertaste. This flavour-packed wine has great aging potential. The winery releases only 25 000 bottles a year.

CHARDONNAY RESERVE 2000
An exquisite blend of 100% barrel fermented and aged Chardonnay wines. An impressive nose of citrus fruit and apricot notes lined with vanilla, chocolate and caramel notes.

MERLOT RESERVE 1999
This is a new blend expressing our desire to create modern and fruit-driven wines. Forward attack on the nose with plenty of black berries and jam notes complemented by vanilla and subtle oak. On the palate it reveals succulent fruit and exotic spices. The tannins are soft, smooth and the aftertaste has pleasant piquant spiciness.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON RESERVE 1999
This is a new blend expressing our desire to create modern and fruit-driven wines. The aroma is intriguing and reveals mineral notes, red berries and smoke. The palate is rich, lush and laced with spice. Rich fruit builds toward a full back palate with long, harmonious, mineral finish.





CHARDONNAY 2001

Enchanting fruity and flowery nose. This wine is mouth filling, rich in pineapple, green apple and peach aromas. The palate is smooth but yet has enough of a fresh acidity. This Chardonnay has elegant long finish and pleasant aftertaste.

MUSCAT 2001
Made from the popular in Bulgaria varety Muscat Ottonel, this wine has a character on its own. Attention is paid to preserve the seductive musc aroma of the grape without the wine being too sweet. If you are into fresh, aromatinc young wines with a good acidity/sweetness balance, we are sure you will enjoy this Muscat!

MERLOT 2000
The first impression is of a bouquet of red berries with distinct cherry and raspberry in the front. The body is medium, well-balanced, the palate replicates the aroma and ends with pleasant bonbons anglais sweetness and long, lingering finish.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2000
The nose is packed with fruit - cherry, plum and blackberry. On the palate the wine is smooth and rounded, ripe and juicy and leads to an elegant finish.

Mastika
Our Mastika "Nektar" is a "pastise" type of drink.
A number of artists such as Van Gough, Toulouse-Lautreck, Picasso, Alfonse Muha and Hemingway, to name but a few, had been aficionados of the anise beverages.
We use an extract of invigorating Bulgarian herbs to achieve the delicate herb aroma of our mastika.
For best results we recommend the following serving method. Do not chill the bottle prior to serving. Pour in a tall glass, then add cold water and ice cubes. We also recommend the delicios combimation of few drops of mastika over ice cream!




Vinegars
Balsamic, Wine vinegar with walnit aroma, Wine vinegar, Cider vinegar.


Pelin
The bitter-sweet wines made with herb extracts have been known since ancient times. In fact, their origin is attributed to the famous Greek doctor Hypocrates. They were popular for their supposed digestive and refreshing properties. Later on, they gain popularity as easy-drinking wines. In Bulgaria we call these wines "pelin" after the herb, which gives their distinctive flavour. Our pelin is made according to a classical Bulgarian recipe inherited from the old winemakers. We craft our pelin with care and use only the finest ingredients and a bouquet of selected fruits and more than 20 herbs and spices.
Serve chilled and enjoy with aromatic dishes and soft cheese.
